Day 9: 18th March – Spring has Sprung

Today’s trivia:

  • Cardiff is the Capital of Wales and declared the capital of Wales in 1955.
  • Cardiff has its own Island the Island of Flat Holm (or Ynys Echni in Welsh). We have no plans to go there as it’s only open in spring and summer and we’ve learnt, it’s not spring yet!
  • Cardiff is the city of Castles. Well, not really. There is only one actually castle in Cardiff city itself.
  • Many celebrities were born in Cardiff, including Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl Plass is named after the writer. Plass is Norwegian for Place and is a nod to his parents who were born in Norway.
  • Cardiff is a tv production hub. The city became a hub for TV production after the success of Doctor Who, which used the city as its home since its revival in 2005. Good old google maps shows lots of locations but think they won’t be as interesting as Emily in Paris sites. Mainly because of the visiting clientele and their antics.

We were greeted by a . . .

Start of a warm sunny day

and then a bit later by . . .

The notable thing we noticed last night while in the room, was that it’s a lot quieter than London and no constant ambulance or police sirens. Not that it was really that noticeable that we wouldn’t stay at the same hotel again if we come back to London. But little did we know🤔

The topic on everyone’s lips at breakfast this morning was the weather and that they were going to make the most of it seeing the last few weeks have been shite (not that they actually said it, but it was implied without uncertainty)

The day was basically spent at St Fagans Museum. A vast collection of buildings from around Wales that have been relocated (brick by brick) to here and preserved.

Not all mine workers were rough & tumble but setup Oakdale Workmen’s Institute to better their education for themselves and their children.

As usual, some things weren’t open as it wasn’t spring yet 🤔 or under renovation or the volunteer watching over the place had gone for a break🤔.

Later we went to Cardiff Bay Trail to see Roald Dahl’s, The Enormous Crocodile and other sights along the way, but mainly to get a traffic infringement!

Captain Robert Falcon Scott passed through Cardiff on his fateful journey to the Antarctica. He also passed through Melbourne.

Today’s travels . . .

Coming soon, I hope once connectivity is regained
