Day 19: 28th March – Museum Maxed out

Today’s trivia is on Armathwaite:

  • Armathwaite Castle began as a 15th-century pele tower, later converted into a mansion in the 17th century.
  • The village was founded by William Rufus (son of William the Conqueror).
  • In 1535, during the dissolution, the local priory was headed by Prioress Agnes Derwentwater.
  • It was historically known for a well near the old priory, believed by locals to have curative properties.
  • The River Eden running through the village is renowned for its salmon fishing.

After a good breakfast we set off before the hords for Derwent Pencil Museum.

They were pretty good, but not nearly as good as those had in York in 2015. Yes those were excellent as can still taste them!

We managed to miss the hords at the pencil place. It was actually interesting and entertaining. The entertainment came in the form of a quiz sheet. It wasn’t too hard provided you read most of the info on each display. For our efforts we got a paint pen each😃.

Again we set off hoping to miss the hords at Beatrix Potter House. A sign outside said by prior booking only. I started doing online, but it got just too hard. So we went inside, they asked, have you booked, I said no but there are seven spots still available, so we were in at the National Trust’s Hill Top Beatrix Potter House.

Another interesting museum, although I don’t remember if I actually had any Rabbit story books when I was young.

We made a short cut via the Bowness Ferry to  Sizergh Castle, the home of the Stricklands since 1239.

Another interesting place of history.

We popped into a farm shop to see what all the fuss was about.

But the best bit was seeing the cows come for their second milking of the day.

And finally we attempted to see a bit of Ambelside but it started raining, the carpark was chockers and the town was overcrowded with tourists, so we went back to hotel for some R&R.

Some . . .

and finally . . .

Today’s travels . . .
