Today’s trivia is on The Lakes District:
- While there are 16 main bodies of water, only Bassenthwaite Lake is officially named a lake; others are waters (e.g., Wastwater) or meres (e.g., Windermere).
- Windermere is the largest and longest lake (10.5 miles/17km), while Wastwater is the deepest at 74 metres. I thought they aren’t lakes!
- Scafell Pike is the highest peak (978m or 3210 ft) and serves as the nation’s highest war memorial.
- Pencils were invented in the Lake District (Seathwaite) due to local graphite, and Beatrix Potter wrote her famous tales here.
- There are roughly six times as many Herdwick sheep as there are people in Cumbria.
- Kirkstone Pass is the highest pass open to motor traffic.
- Sticky Toffee Pudding was created in the 1970s by chef Francis Coulson at Sharrow Bay.
- The area is home to rare red squirrels, Ospreys, and Natterjack toads
It’s still bleak outside but . . .

Only another 16 to find!

We watched and waited as the rain came down at Gracemere to clear for a visit to the National Trust’s Allan Bank and Grasmere site.

Not a great lot to see or read but gardens would be good on a better day. But can’t complian with free entry on our Nationsl Trust pass.
We plonked ourselves in an art gallery come cafe to warm up a bit.
The weather cleared briefly so we looked around a bit at graves and The gingerbread shop that’s made it to tiktok.

We love going to zoos and there’s a small one attached to our hotel. Weather was just holding off, we’ve got a 2-for-1 deal, so we off we went.

Did you spot the Aussie? They have a pair of juveniles.
I do feel sorry for the animals, specially the birds and in two minds if should pay to see and hence support not necessarily a good industry.
One animal who doesn’t know how good she’s got it is Safi! Apparently she used to live down the road in the caravan park near the zoo and made her way up here and into the hotel 5 years ago and hasn’t left.

Today’s travels . . .
Coming soon, I hope once connectivity is regained between garmin aand strava
