Day 37: 15th March – Haunted House

Today’s trivia is Slaine Castle:

  • It is widely believed that Bram Stoker drew inspiration from Slains Castle for Count Dracula’s castle.
  • The castle fell into disrepair after 1916 and was abandoned in 1925, at which point the roof was removed to avoid paying taxes.
  • The ruin was used to stand in for Castle Mey, the Queen Mother’s Scottish home, in the Netflix series The Crown.
  • Before it was a ruin, the castle was a 19th-century luxury venue, hosting celebrities such as author Bram Stoker, Winston Churchill, and former Prime Minister Asquith.
  • The ruins sit on the edge of a cliff, and there is no fencing.
  • The current structure is a mix of styles, predominantly from a 1836-1837 rebuilding when it was remodeled into a Scots Baronial mansion with extensive granite facing.
  • Some accounts claim the castle is haunted by the ghost of Victor Hay, the 21st Earl of Erroll.

Yes, you’re correct, the fan started again, around 6am! Front desk said nothing can be done as your fan is linked to that on the roof. He said harden up princess and then gave me that blank look!

Surely not . . .

The day continued at the Union Square shopping centre looking for some suitable stuff for me . . .

The malls between the shops are nice and open and uncluttered, unlike Wesrfield with cafes, nail & cosmetic stalls make one long continuous nightmare to walk through.

We then went on a walkabout tour of Aberdeen. First stop was Footdee, and along the way there was . . .

At Footdee there was . . .

some ships built here made it to Australia . . .

There’s a huge number of tenaments that are airbnb and hence lost it’s character & feel.

We then looked around old Aberdeen and decided we’d had enough and got to the car just as it started to rain, HGiT.

Yes, so off to another ruined castle, Slaine Castle, where upon arrival the rain stopped, the car park was free and the castle was free too, HGiT . . .

and guess what, we got back to the car just as it started to rain again, HGiT.

We needed a 🚽, and Kilmarnock Arms Hotel stood prominately infront of us and looked invitingly appealing. Even with tarten curtains!

Back on the fan noise, I win. I did harden up, stood on toilet and turned the fan vent closed, so no more air flow. What I suspect it will mean is whoever is attached to the duct will have an increase in their air flow and hence noise.

Lazy dinner again . . .

Today’s travels . . .
