Day 46: 24th March – We had a Shag on a Rock

Today’s trivia is on Farne Islands:

  • Thousands of puffins return to the same burrows annually to raise chicks, often called the “clowns of the sea”.
  • The islands host one of England’s  breeding colonies of Atlantic grey seals, with over 2,000 pups born every autumn.
  • Arctic terns are known to dive-bomb visitors to protect their nests.
  • Eider ducks are locally known as ‘Cuddy’s’ (or Cuthbert’s) ducks, named after Saint Cuthbert, who was said to have protected them.
  • Sir David Attenborough declared the Farne Islands his favorite place in the UK to see nature.

For breakfast we asked for plunger coffee. Yes that blank look appeared on the waitress’ face. Oh cafetière you mean. Whatever! At least it’s one step up for flavour and taste.

The french would be horrified with the cheese presentation.

Thankfully the tyre pressure is holding and the fob still works.

Our first port of call, is a port. The port of Seahouses harbour for a puffin tour.

When we went to check in I asked do you see the pope on the Holy Tour option? Yep, there was that blank look and a, the Holy tours dont start till May. But we were cond into upgrading our puffin tour from a P Pack tour to the Royal tour. For £5 each we could get off the cruise liner and be close to the birds. Was it a bargain 🤔🤔.

The fog had set in . . .

While waiting for yhe boat we saw . . .

Boating around the islands . . .

plus . . .

On Inner Farne . . .

Still on the island . . .

So many birds and its only the start of the season . . .

Was the upgrade worth it, well YES as you get up close and personal with the wildlife. It was just ashame there was fog, so made photography flat.

The crew on the cruise recommended Cairns in Queensland as you can’t get fresher than canned fish. I gave him that blank look! Finally he recommended Lewis’s Fish Restuarant. We went to make a booking for around 7pm and the lovely lass said oh no need to book, just turn up🤔. On a Friday night, just turn up🤔🤔🤔🤔. We’ll see.

Having free time we took off to the Holy Island before the tide came in.

Enough warnings . . .

and on the island . . .

Nooooooooo . . .

At Lewis’s, there were more staff than customers😱. The Pensioner’s special was tempting; fish, chips peas and a pot of tea! But we settled on . . .

Bad choice.

We washed the meal down with drinks back at the hotel . . .

Goid choice.

Today’s travels . . .
