Day 52: 30th March – That’s it with Capri

Today’s trivia is on our hire car:

  • Designed by American Philip T. Clark, who also worked on the Ford Mustang, the Capri was deliberately designed to have the “visual appeal of speed while stationary”.
The Name: Originally, Ford planned to call it “Colt,” but Mitsubishi held the rights to the name.
  • Over its 18-year lifespan, roughly 1.9 million Capri units were produced.
The “Millionth” Milestone: In August 1973, only four years after its launch, the 1,000,000th Capri rolled off the production line.
  • Towards the end of its life, the 2.8i Injection and the final “Capri 280” (Brooklands) were the highest performance models, with top speeds exceeding 130 mph.
  • The very last special edition was known as the Capri 280 or Brooklands 2.8, with only 1,038 made.
  • The Capri was often marketed as the “weekend warrior” vehicle for the working-class hero.

Today’s the day we get rid of the ford capri, which is meant to be equal to the Volvo XC40 we’d signed up to. Well, it’s not . . .

  • It decides if it should lock or unlock when you are nearby.
  • It decides when and if it’ll connect to my phone.
  • It decides to disconnect and turn screen blank, when it wants.
  • It decides when the driver’s set seat position will work when get into car or not.
  • It decides when to slow to 20mph in a 70mph zone for no reason.
  • It decides to break thinking there’s going to be a rear end collision with car in front, when there’s no car within 100m.
  • 2IC can’t stay in car if I walk away, as car alarm will go off, as it’s detected someone in car, even when not locked and feature turned off.

If another old cogger comes up to me and says, that’s not a capri, I’m going to deck them!

Some stats:

  • 4,606 miles, aka 7,415km.
  • 28kWhr/100mile. Which is around 17.5kWhr/100km, which is pretty good bearing in mind a sat on the posted/speedo speed and not the GPS reading which is generally 5-10km/hr understated.
  • The attendant was astounded that there was no damage to the car and that we returned with 100% charge as per when we picked it up! Apparently most cars have damage.

Very little happened today to report on, other than a first charge spot at 120 miles away was required as car was only odd 40% charged when we started. I was trying to give away our biscuit accumulation from the hotels.

2IC wasn’t happy I went off offering biscuits. Offered to a woman from Cambridge. She didn’t sound British, came here 15yrs ago fron 🇨🇦. She and husband took one each.

Glad we weren’t going the other way . . .

The final charge was done down the road from enterprise plus we did some shopping.

and the final leg was the train to Russel Square. Took the wrong ThamsLink train but turned out easier although the change at Victoria Station was a bit chaotic with sooo many people going home, the train was packed.

HGiT, at the hotel, the reservation system was down, so we got a free drink. Drink each, note the operative word drink! Lucky for that, otherwise two cocktails would have been around $90😱😱😱😱. As it was still water cost us, forgot to ask for tap😱😱😱😱.

Our room was the one we had 6 weeks ago, Room 752. HGiT, just like being back home!

Now have a week in London.

Today’s travels . . .
